Insulation Piercing technology now also available for coax cable

01 September 2016

The development of the new IPC-2-1-T surface mount coax cable connector is based on Zierick’s award winning insulation piercing technology (IPC). Zierick’s newest insulation piercing connector allows for the simultaneous termination of multiple RG174/U or RG316/U coax cables.

How does it work?

First, these IPC connectors are surface mounted to the PCB. After reflow, the outer jacket is removed and the braid is stripped at approximately 6,35mm in one single operation. Then the cable is inserted into the hole of the housing. Force is then applied to the top of the plastic housing and the three piercing blades cut through the insulation and penetrate into the shield and the cable’s core, completing the wire connection process.

Zierick’s IPC-2-1-T Surface Mount Coaxial Cable Connector offers numerous benefits:

Saves you labour time and costs

  • Eliminates the need to solder wires to the PCB
  • Allows for the efficient termination of both the shield and conductor at the same time

Gives you a higher quality termination

  • Maintains consistent pressure on the wires for better conductor contact
  • Provides a superior strain relief

Provides a space saving solution

  • Uses minimal PCB space. This gives you the possibility to work with smaller PCB’s or to connect  more wires to the same surface

The terminal is perfect for applications with a usable range of up to 3.25 GHz while providing a VSWR of less than 1,5:1 (at 2 GHz) and 1,6:1 (at 3 GHz).
